Play-Based Learning Environment

Learning about Play based learning environment made me realize how important it is to integrate indoor and outdoor play area in schools particularly in primary schools, owing to various benefits such as freedom, hands-on experiences, motor skills development, stimulates creativity and imagination. Interesting part of the lecture was, we are made to plan and design the play area in school or ECCD center. So, our group have illustrated our play area which include following play areas in and around our school;  Gathering room,  Art space,    Reading corner,  Nap time  , Exploration room,    First aids corner,  Meditation corner,   Swings, slide, seesaw, and sand box,  Football ground, and  Mini garden.   After designing and learning about the principles of indoor and outdoor play area, I reflect back about the school that I have been to my teaching practice, then I realize that there was very limited play area like volleyba...

Some common play practices in our cultural settings

  Reflecting on a session exploring games from different cultures, I found that understanding these games offers deep insights into how communities express their values, history, and social bonds through play.  For example, games like kuru, a traditional dart game played during festivals or leisure, is a perfect example of how play connects people and celebrates culture. Khuru involves throwing wooden arrows at a target and is enjoyed by both men and women, promoting teamwork, community spirit, and joy through singing and dancing during the game. This insight showed me how integrating such culturally rich games into classrooms can make learning fun and meaningful, helping children feel proud of their heritage. On the other hand, I realised that ignoring cultural context in play can make activities less engaging and inclusive. A Game of Secrets: The Whispering Game in Childhood   Childhood memories revolve around a game of Whispering, which I used to play with my village and urban friends during winter vacation. On a chilly winter afternoon, our laughter echoed through the sparkling, snow-laden landscape as my friends and I gathered in a cosy huddle near a towering, frosty pine tree. The air was crisp, filled with the scent of pine needles. With rosy cheeks and gleaming eyes reflecting the winter sun, we formed a snug circle, eagerly anticipating the start of the whisper game. As the cold wind gently brushed against our faces, we leaned in close, our breath visible in the frosty air, sharing secret messages that felt like magical whirls of snowflakes. Each soft whisper transported us into a world of imagination, where our giggles mingled with the sound of bonfire crackling, turning our shared secrets into glorious tales of wonder.  In that enchanting winter, the joy of the whisper game blossome...
